Why fit in when you were born to standout?

By Margaret, 02 March, 2015.

Have you ever wondered why you are fascinated by some people and not by others? Have you ever dreamed of being more fascinating yourself in your personal life?

What does it really mean?

A couple of definitions I found of "fascination" -

"The capability of eliciting intense interest or of being very attractive."
"A feeling of great liking for something wonderful and unusual."

When you fascinate someone, they are just thinking about you. They're not distracted by the next phone call they need to make or the next person they are meeting. When they are in this state, you can really connect with them and have the opportunity to get them to care about what you are saying.

Sally Hogshead, author of "Fascinate: Your 7 Triggers to Persuasion and Captivation", says we are already fascinating from the day we were born. We all have our own unique essence that is truly fascinating to some people and not to others.

So how can we increase our chances to fascinate so we can be more successful?

Hogstead lists 7 behavioural motivators that we all use and each one creates a different type of response. She believes that if we discover how the world sees us, which traits we naturally display, we should cultivate them and be more of who we already are.

Innovation -You change the game with creativity
Passion -You connect with emotion
Power -You lead with command
Prestige -You earn respect with higher standards
Trust -You build loyalty with consistency
Mystique -You communicate with substance
Alert -You prevent problems with care

Do you want to be vanilla or pistachio?
Hogstead explains a little more in her story. "In our home we buy vanilla ice-cream. It isn't anyone's favourite, but we will all eat it. It's like the lowest common denominator. A lot of people like it, but nobody raves about it. There are fewer people in the world who like pistachio flavour, but they will travel to find it in a shop and they are raving fans.

I'm not for everybody, but the people who care about me, really care about me.
If you're not creating a negative response from somebody, you're not fascinating to anybody. This world is not changed by people who sort of care. This world is changed by people who passionately, audaciously care.

If you would like to have people care about and be fascinated by you, don't be afraid to really show your core personality traits. Some people will love you and some people won't, and that's perfectly fine.
